Jageshwar Temple Pilgrimage — 3 Days / 2 Nights

A Thousand Years of Stone, Forest & Silence

Before Kedarnath became famous and Badrinath filled with queues, there was Jageshwar — a valley of 124 stone temples hidden inside a deodar forest in the Kumaon Himalayas, older than most of what we call history. This is the 8th Jyotirling. The Archaeological Survey of India protects it. UNESCO has taken note. And somehow, most travellers still haven't heard of it.

This 3-day circuit doesn't just take you to a temple. It walks you through a millennium of devotion, into forests where the air smells of cedar and incense, past shrines where river water has carved ritual paths for centuries. You'll also stop at Chitai — the temple where thousands of letters and bells hang from the trees, written by ordinary people to a god they believe actually writes back.

Come as a pilgrim, a history lover, or simply someone who needs three days away from everything loud.

Frequently Asked Questions — Jageshwar Temple Pilgrimage

Where does this package start and end?

The package starts and ends in Delhi. Our representative picks you up from Delhi Airport or Railway Station on Day 1 and drops you back in Delhi on the evening of Day 3. The one-way drive to Jageshwar is approximately 380 km and takes 9–10 hours, passing through Moradabad, Kathgodam, Bhimtal and Almora.

What is the best time to visit Jageshwar?

The two ideal windows are March–June and August–November. March to June offers pleasant temperatures and clear Himalayan views. August to November brings post-monsoon greenery and stable roads. The Jageshwar Monsoon Festival during Shravan (July–August) is a spectacular time to visit — rituals at the temple are amplified and the valley fills with devotion — though road conditions can be unpredictable during peak monsoon. The temple is open year-round, with aarti at 7:15 AM and 6:45 PM daily.

What is included in the ₹11,000 per person price?

The price covers 2 nights hotel accommodation at Jageshwar, daily breakfast and dinner (Day 1 to Day 3), a private cab for all transfers from Delhi pickup to Delhi drop, the evening aarti visit on Day 1, morning aarti and guided temple walk on Day 2, the forest trek to Vriddha Jageshwar, a visit to Chitai Golu Devta Temple in Almora, and all toll taxes, driver allowance and fuel charges.

What is NOT included in the package?

Lunches on all days, temple entry fees and personal offerings or donations, optional activities such as cable car or boating, personal expenses and shopping, travel insurance, and tips for the driver and guide are not included. Any activity not mentioned in the itinerary will be charged separately.

What is Jageshwar Dham and why is it significant?

Jageshwar Dham is a cluster of 124 ancient stone temples dating from the 7th to 13th centuries, located 36 km northeast of Almora in the Jataganga river valley at an altitude of 1,870 metres. It is considered the 8th Jyotirling among the twelve and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The complex includes the Dandeshwar Temple (the largest), the Maha Mrityunjaya shrine (the oldest and only one of its kind in India), the Surya and Nava-graha temples, and intricate Lakulisha carvings. There is no entry fee to visit the complex.

What is Vriddha Jageshwar and is the trek difficult?

Vriddha Jageshwar — meaning "Elder Jageshwar" — is an older, quieter shrine perched on a hilltop above the main temple complex, where Lord Shiva is said to have meditated. The forest trail to reach it is approximately 3 km one way, through deodar and rhododendron forest with Himalayan peak views along the way. The trek is moderate in difficulty — suitable for anyone in reasonable health — and takes about 1.5 hours each way. It is optional and can be skipped if preferred.

What is Chitai Golu Devta Temple and why is it on this itinerary?

Chitai Golu Devta Temple, located 8 km from Almora en route back from Jageshwar, is dedicated to Golu Devta — the Kumaoni deity of justice believed to grant every sincere wish. Devotees write handwritten letters to the deity and tie thousands of brass bells to the trees surrounding the temple as offerings when their wishes are fulfilled. The result is a temple draped in letters and ringing with bells, unlike anything else in India. It is a deeply local, deeply moving place and a natural complement to the Jageshwar experience.

Is this package suitable for senior citizens and first-time pilgrims?

Yes. The Jageshwar temple complex is completely flat and walkable — fully accessible for senior citizens and those with limited mobility. The Vriddha Jageshwar trek is optional and can be comfortably skipped. First-time pilgrims will find the pace relaxed and the circuit well-managed, with a guide to explain the history and significance of each shrine. The package is designed to be immersive without being physically demanding.

Is any permit required for this tour?

No permit is required. Jageshwar Dham is fully open to all Indian nationals without any special registration or Inner Line Permit. Foreign nationals should carry valid identification and verify current visa conditions for Uttarakhand travel before booking.

What are the aarti timings at Jageshwar Temple?

The Jageshwar temple complex is open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily. Aarti is performed at 7:15 AM (morning) and 6:45 PM (evening). Both aartis are included in this package — the evening aarti on Day 1 upon arrival, and the morning aarti on Day 2 before the full temple walk begins. There is no entry fee at any of the 124 temples in the complex.

Can I customise this package or extend it?

Absolutely. SnazzyTrips specialises in fully customised Uttarakhand travel. You can extend this itinerary to include Kainchi Dham, Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Binsar, Mukteshwar or Ranikhet, upgrade your hotel category, adjust departure dates, or add extra nights at Jageshwar for a slower, deeper experience. Contact us at +91 9758493545 / 8126762844 or book a free 30-minute Zoom consultation with our Uttarakhand travel experts to plan your perfect circuit.

What should I pack for this trip?

Pack comfortable walking shoes for the temple complex and the optional Vriddha Jageshwar trek, a light warm layer for evenings (Jageshwar at 1,870 m is noticeably cooler than the plains even in summer), modest clothing suitable for temple visits, a small daypack for the trek, any personal medication, and valid photo ID. No special trekking gear or equipment is required.

Tour Plans

Day 1
Day 1 — Delhi to Jageshwar (approx. 380 km / 9–10 hrs)

An early departure from Delhi sets the pace. The drive itself is the beginning — the plains give way to foothills, foothills give way to the Kumaon ranges, and somewhere past Kathgodam and Bhimtal, the road narrows and the deodar trees close in overhead. You arrive in Jageshwar in the late afternoon.

Check into your hotel, freshen up, and walk to the temple complex as the evening light turns golden. The aarti on the banks of the Jata Ganga is not a spectacle — it's intimate, local, and completely unhurried. Bells, smoke, chanting. No crowds, no rush. Dinner and overnight at Jageshwar.

Day 2
Day 2 — Jageshwar Full Day: Temples, Trek & Almora

This is the day the trip earns itself. Rise early for the morning aarti — the complex in dawn light, half fog, half flame, is genuinely unforgettable. Spend the morning exploring at your own pace: the colossal Dandeshwar Temple (the largest in the complex), the ancient Maha Mrityunjaya shrine, the Surya and Nava-graha temples, the Lakulisha carvings. Your guide will bring the stones to life.

After lunch, take the 3 km forest trail uphill to Vriddha Jageshwar — the "elder Jageshwar," perched above the valley on a hilltop where Lord Shiva is said to have meditated. The views of the Himalayan peaks from up there are worth every step.

On the way back, stop at Chitai Golu Devta Temple near Almora — a place unlike any other, where devotees write handwritten letters to the deity and tie bells to the trees as tokens of faith. Thousands of bells. An extraordinary sight.

Evening return to Jageshwar. Dinner and overnight.

Day 3
Day 3 — Jageshwar to Delhi (Departure)

One final morning walk through the temple complex or along the Jata Ganga if time allows. Breakfast, check out, and begin the drive back to Delhi. You arrive with something quieter in you than when you left.
