🚗 How to Reach Nainital from Delhi

The Delhi to Nainital journey is one of North India’s most convenient hill station routes, offering multiple comfortable travel options via train, road, and flight combinations. The total distance between Delhi and Nainital is approximately 310 km.

SnazzyTrips coordinates all travel options with seamless Kathgodam pickup, local transfers, and Kumaon ground support.

🚆 Recommended Route 1 — Delhi to Kathgodam by Train

Route: Delhi / Hazrat Nizamuddin → Kathgodam Railway Station

⏱️ Train Duration: Approx. 6–7 Hours via Shatabdi Express or overnight Ranikhet Express

🚖 Kathgodam → Nainital: 34 km | Approx. 1.5 Hours by Private Cab

The Kathgodam train route is the most popular and comfortable Delhi-to-Nainital option. Choose the morning Shatabdi Express for same-day arrival or the overnight Ranikhet Express for a convenient after-office departure. SnazzyTrips manages live train tracking & platform pickup coordination.

🛣️ Recommended Route 2 — Delhi to Nainital by Road

Route: Delhi / Noida / Gurgaon → Nainital by Private Cab

🛣️ Distance & Drive Time: 310 km | Approx. 6.5–7.5 Hours

Perfect for Delhi families, NCR groups, and travelers preferring door-to-door comfort. The route crosses Moradabad, Rampur, Rudrapur, and the Uttarakhand Terai belt before the scenic mountain climb to Nainital. An early morning departure (4:00–5:00am) usually ensures a relaxed afternoon arrival.

✈️ Recommended Route 3 — Delhi to Pantnagar by Flight

Route: Delhi Airport → Pantnagar Airport → Nainital

⏱️ Flight Duration: Approx. 45–60 Minutes

🚖 Pantnagar → Nainital: 80 km | Approx. 2.5 Hours by Road

The fastest travel option for premium travelers and short-duration visitors. Delhi–Pantnagar flights allow you to maximize your time in the hills instead of spending extra hours in transit.

💡 Travel Tip: For most Delhi & NCR travelers, the Kathgodam train + private transfer combination offers the best balance of comfort, timing, and smooth arrival into Nainital.

🏔️ About Nainital — Kumaon’s Lake Capital

Nainital sits at 2,084 metres above sea level in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand, cradled within a natural amphitheatre of seven forested hills surrounding the iconic Naini Lake. Established as a British hill station in 1841, Nainital remains one of India’s most scenic and naturally beautiful mountain lake destinations.

🌊 Naini Lake — The Heart of Nainital

The famous Naini Lake stretches approximately 1.5 km long and 0.5 km wide, naturally fed by underground springs flowing through the surrounding hillsides. Through the day, the lake transforms in character — shifting from deep emerald tones in the morning to soft silver-grey reflections at dusk. The surrounding Himalayan ridges create the distinctive mountain atmosphere that sets Nainital apart from other Indian hill stations.

🦋 Bhimtal — Kumaon’s Quieter Lake Escape

Located 22 km from Nainital at an elevation of 1,370 metres, Bhimtal predates Nainital itself. This quieter lake town is surrounded by dense forest and centred around its iconic island lake. Once home to a British-era tea plantation, Bhimtal offers a more relaxed, local, and nature-focused Kumaon experience — ideal for travelers seeking a slower alternative to Nainital’s lively pace.

🌲 Sattal — The Seven Lakes Forest Circuit

Situated around 23 km from Nainital, Sattal (Seven Lakes) lies hidden within ancient oak and rhododendron forests at approximately 1,370 metres. This interconnected freshwater lake system is one of the finest birdwatching destinations in the Kumaon Himalayas. Away from the main trails, the forest landscape becomes quiet, mossy, and deeply immersive — a rare Himalayan ecosystem experience.

Why Travelers Love This Circuit: The combination of Nainital’s iconic lake atmosphere, Bhimtal’s relaxed Himalayan charm, and Sattal’s pristine forest ecosystem creates one of Uttarakhand’s most rewarding short-duration mountain journeys.

💡 SnazzyTrips Insights — 21 Years at Nainital & Bhimtal

Across 21+ years of managing Kumaon circuits for Delhi & NCR travelers, our team at SnazzyTrips has seen the same patterns repeat — the small decisions that separate a rushed hill station checklist from a genuinely refreshing Himalayan holiday.

🌅 The Lake Morning Insight

Our strongest recommendation for first-time Delhi travelers: reach Nainital on Day 1 before 3:00pm and head directly to the lake.

Between 10:00am and 5:00pm, Nainital receives heavy day-visitor movement. Mall Road, the lakefront, and the boating area become noticeably busier. That’s why our itineraries intentionally protect the 6:30am–8:30am lake window — quiet boat rides, calm water reflections, and peaceful temple visits before the crowds arrive.

🚗 The Kathgodam Departure Timing Rule

One of the most common Delhi-to-Nainital travel mistakes is underestimating Day 5 descent traffic.

Our operational rule is simple: leave Nainital by 7:00am for a 10:00am Kathgodam departure. Heavy inbound traffic toward Nainital begins building from around 8:00am onward, especially on weekends and holidays. Missing a return train due to late departure is one of the most avoidable itinerary errors on the circuit.

🧥 The Delhi–Nainital Temperature Gap

The transition from Delhi NCR heat to Nainital weather is sharper than many first-time travelers expect.

Delhi in May: 38–42°C
Nainital in May: 12–22°C

Our advice after two decades of operating this route: carry one proper warm layer — not just a light jacket. Early mornings and evenings in Nainital remain cool even in peak summer months, and travelers consistently underestimate the temperature difference.

📌 Quick Facts & Traveler Tips

📍 Quick Fact — Naini Lake
Naini Lake sits at 2,084 metres above sea level — approximately 1.5 km long and 500 metres wide — naturally fed by underground springs flowing through the surrounding seven forested hills. The lake lies just 34 km from Kathgodam Railway Station, making Nainital one of North India’s most accessible Himalayan destinations.

🧭 Traveler Tip — Snow View Point Timing
Take the Snow View Point cable car before 8:30am for the clearest Himalayan mountain views. On most days, cloud cover begins building across the Nainital ridge by late morning, reducing long-distance snow peak visibility.

📍 Quick Fact — Bhimtal Lake
At 1,370 metres elevation, Bhimtal is the largest lake in the Kumaon Himalayas. Quieter, greener, and generally less crowded than Nainital, it features a distinctive island café in the centre of the lake — accessible by traditional rowboat.

🌤️ Best Time for Nainital & Bhimtal Tour from Delhi

Nainital & Bhimtal are year-round Himalayan destinations. Unlike high-altitude shrine circuits that close during winter, the Kumaon lake region remains accessible across most of the year. Weather, lake colour, Himalayan visibility, sightseeing conditions, and crowd levels change significantly by season.

Delhi travelers should choose their departure timing based on the specific Kumaon experience they want.

🌸 March to May — Spring & Peak Season

The most popular season for Delhi & NCR travelers — featuring rhododendron blooms in March–April, pleasant mountain weather, and the classic visual appeal of Nainital hill station life.

Temperature: Approx. 10–22°C — a refreshing contrast from Delhi’s rising summer heat.

May brings the highest annual visitor numbers, especially during school holidays. For May departures, book hotels and train tickets 6–8 weeks in advance.

🍂 October to November — Best Overall Season

Widely considered the best overall season for Nainital & Bhimtal. Post-monsoon skies turn exceptionally clear, forests glow deep green, and Himalayan peaks become visible on crisp October mornings.

Expect lighter crowds than summer, outstanding Mukteshwar mountain panoramas, vivid lake colours, and excellent Sattal birdwatching conditions.

❄️ December to February — Winter Hill Station Escape

Winter transforms Nainital into a quiet, atmospheric mountain retreat. Night temperatures typically range between 2–6°C, and occasional snowfall may dust the surrounding hills.

For Delhi travelers seeking a peaceful winter getaway — empty lake mornings, mist over the water, and quieter evenings on Mall Road — this season delivers a very different Himalayan experience. Warm clothing is essential.

🌧️ July to August — Monsoon Season

The Kumaon monsoon brings heavy rainfall, lush forests, dramatic cloudscapes, and intense greenery.

Road conditions on the Nainital–Kathgodam and Mukteshwar routes can occasionally be affected by landslides or weather disruptions. Generally not recommended for first-time visitors or family groups, although experienced Himalayan travelers often appreciate the extraordinary monsoon landscape.

💡 SnazzyTrips Recommendation: For the best balance of weather, Himalayan clarity, sightseeing quality, and manageable crowds, choose October–November. For summer escapes from Delhi heat, March–May remains the most popular season.

📅 Month-by-Month Guide — Nainital & Bhimtal from Delhi

Month Weather at Nainital Temperature Suitability for Delhi Travelers
January Cold, occasional snowfall 2–12°C Peaceful winter retreat
February Cold, clearing weather 4–14°C Early spring atmosphere
March Spring, rhododendron blooms 8–18°C Excellent bloom season
April Pleasant, clear weather 10–22°C Best introductory season
May Warm, summer peak 14–24°C Popular — book 6–8 weeks early
June Pre-monsoon warmth 16–26°C Good timing, avoid July–August
July Monsoon rains 17–24°C Not recommended
August Monsoon, lush landscape 16–23°C Not recommended
September Clearing skies 14–22°C Rapidly improving conditions
October Clear, crisp mountain weather 8–18°C ⭐ Best overall season
November Cool, quiet atmosphere 5–15°C Excellent — lighter crowds
December Cold winter conditions 2–10°C Winter hill-station retreat

Tour Plans

Day 1
Arrival from Delhi | Kathgodam to Nainital | First Lake Evening

Depart Delhi by morning Shatabdi or overnight Ranikhet Express. Arrive Kathgodam. Our driver waiting at the station exit with name placard. Transfer to Nainital — 34 km, approximately 1.5 hours on the Kumaon hill road.

The Kathgodam-to-Nainital ascent is the Delhi traveler's first encounter with the Kumaon hills. The cab leaves the flat Terai landscape — the sal forests and sugarcane fields of the Uttarakhand foothills — and begins climbing through the Shivalik range toward the Nainital ridge. The temperature drops 6–8°C within 20 minutes of leaving Kathgodam. By the time the cab rounds the final bend and the Naini Lake appears in the horseshoe of seven forested hills below, the sensory distance from Delhi is total.

Check in to Nainital hotel. Freshen up. Afternoon — first Mall Road walk. The glacial lake in the afternoon light, the seven hills reflected in the water, the boatmen calling from the jetty — for Delhi families arriving at a Himalayan lake for the first time, Naini Lake is the visual introduction to the Kumaon hills that everything else on this circuit builds from.

Evening — Naina Devi temple visit on the north bank of the lake. The Shakti Peetha in the early evening, with the lake below and the Nainital ridge lights beginning to appear on the surrounding hills. Welcome dinner at hotel. Early sleep.

🛏️ Overnight — Nainital hotel

Day 2
Nainital Lake Morning | Snow View Point | Eco Cave Gardens

6:30am start. The Naini Lake at dawn — before the day-trip buses from Bareilly and Haldwani begin arriving around 10:00am. The lake in the early morning has a completely different quality from the afternoon — the water still, the seven hills in mist, the Naina Devi temple quiet, the boatmen preparing their first circuits of the morning.

Boat ride at 7:00am — the lake from the water at first light. The forested hillsides, the Nainital ridge above, and the specific Himalayan morning silence that the afternoon crowds do not allow.

Snow View Point cable car — 2,270 metres. On clear mornings, the Himalayan panorama from Snow View Point includes Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul, and the full eastern Kumaon snow range spread across the northern horizon. For Delhi travelers seeing the Himalayan snow peaks from proximity for the first time, this is consistently the most striking single image of the trip.

Afternoon — Eco Cave Gardens — the rock caves, hanging gardens, and musical fountain circuit near the Mall Road. Particularly popular with Delhi families and school groups. Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) walking trail through the Ayarpata forest — the Nainital valley below in the afternoon light.

Evening — Mall Road leisure. Tibetan market for woollens and mountain goods. Dinner at hotel.

🛏️ Overnight — Nainital hotel

Day 3
Bhimtal | Sattal | Naukuchiatal Circuit

Morning breakfast. Full-day Kumaon lake circuit.

Bhimtal — 22 km from Nainital, 1,370 metres. The largest lake in the Kumaon hills — ringed by oak forest with an island café accessible by rowboat. Bhimtal is the Kumaon that existed before Nainital became famous. Quieter, more local, and deeply beautiful in the morning. The lake is 1.5 times larger than Naini Lake with none of the hill station tourist infrastructure — just the water, the forest, the rowboats, and the specific Kumaon quality of early morning mountain light on still water.

Naukuchiatal — the Nine-Cornered Lake — 4 km from Bhimtal. The deepest lake in the Kumaon Himalayas at 40 metres depth. Paragliding, kayaking, and rowboating available. For Delhi adventure travelers, Naukuchiatal is the most activity-rich lake on the Kumaon circuit.

Sattal — the Seven Lakes in oak and rhododendron forest, 23 km from Nainital. One of the finest birdwatching circuits in the Kumaon Himalayas — 500+ recorded species including the rare Khalij Pheasant and numerous Himalayan warblers. The forest trail at Sattal — dense, mossy, completely quiet away from the main path — is the most genuinely natural Kumaon forest experience available within this circuit's day-trip range.

Afternoon return to Nainital. Leisure time. Dinner at hotel.

🛏️ Overnight — Nainital hotel

Day 4
Mukteshwar Viewpoint | Chauli ki Jali | Himalayan Panorama

Morning breakfast. Drive to Mukteshwar — 51 km from Nainital, approximately 1.5 hours on the mountain road. Altitude: 2,286 metres.

Mukteshwar is the Kumaon viewpoint that Nainital travelers consistently wish they had more time at. The drive from Nainital climbs through apple orchards, pine forests, and the old Mukteshwar fruit belt — the CIMAP research station visible through the orchards, the road narrowing as it climbs toward the ridge.

Mukteshwar viewpoint — the Himalayan panorama on a clear morning. Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul (7,120m), Panchachuli (6,904m), and the full eastern Kumaon snow range spread across the northern horizon from this ridge. For Delhi travelers whose frame of reference for mountains is the Aravalli or the Vindhyas, the Mukteshwar snow peak panorama is a categorically different visual experience.

Chauli ki Jali — the rock outcrop at the edge of the Mukteshwar cliff. The Kumaon valley drops approximately 1,000 metres below the outcrop — a vertiginous, spectacular, and genuinely dramatic Himalayan cliff-edge viewpoint. Children love it. Many Delhi parents find it more alarming than their children do.

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple — the ancient Shiva temple that gives the village its name, adjacent to the viewpoint.

Return to Nainital by late afternoon. Final Mall Road walk. Last evening at the lake. Dinner. Pack for departure.

🛏️ Overnight — Nainital hotel

Day 5
Departure | Transfer to Kathgodam | Return to Delhi

6:30am–7:00am departure from Nainital hotel — our team's non-negotiable departure time for all Kathgodam Shatabdi connections.

The Nainital ghat road from town to Kathgodam carries heavy incoming traffic from Delhi and Bareilly from 8:00am onward — particularly on Sundays and long weekends. A 7:00am departure ensures smooth Kathgodam arrival well before any morning train connection.

Transfer to Kathgodam Railway Station — 34 km, approximately 1.5 hours. Depart for Delhi.

The return train to Delhi carries the specific quality of a completed Kumaon hill station circuit — Naini Lake at dawn, Bhimtal in morning stillness, the Mukteshwar snow peaks in the afternoon clarity, Mall Road at dusk. These are the Nainital memories that Delhi families describe most specifically and carry home most permanently from the Kumaon hills.
